Real Madrid are interested in Wolfsburg defender Ricardo Rodriguez, according to Madrid-based daily Marca.

Marcelo has been the first choice left-back for Real Madrid, with Portugal international Fabio Coentrao being his backup.

However, Coentrao has been unable to perform on a consistent basis, prompting Los Blancos to look for a new left-back as they strengthen their ranks for the coming season.

Real Madrid were interested in Valencia’s Jose Gaya, but he signed a long-term contract with Los Che towards the end of last season.

Rafael Benitez's side have also been linked with Bayern Munich’s David Alaba, Augsburg’s Baba Rahman as well as FC Porto’s Alex Sandro.

But now they have set their sights on Switzerland international Rodriguez as they prepare to challenge for major silverware in the coming season.

Rodriguez has been at Wolfsburg since 2012 and contributed ten goals and five assists last season to help the Bundesliga side finish second in the league standings and win the DFB Pokal.

The 22-year-old has also earned 29 caps for the Switzerland national team.
