Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho feels Kevin De Bruyne didn’t have the mentality to succeed with the Blues.

With 16 goals and 28 assists last season, the Belgian has become one of the most sought after playmakers in the world and clubs such as Manchester City are ready to pay top dollar to secure his signature from Wolfsburg this summer.

However, De Bruyne first came to prominence when Chelsea signed the then highly-rated youngster from KRC Genk in January 2012.

After loan spells at Genk and Werder Bremen, the Belgian returned to Chelsea in the summer of 2013 in the hope of making it in England.

However, after working under Mourinho for six months, De Bruyne was sold to Wolfsburg in January 2014 for a fee of around €25m.

De Bruyne has vowed that he will never play under Mourinho again, but the Portuguese stressed that he wanted to keep the Belgian at the club.

“Actually, I wanted to keep him”, Mourinho was quoted as saying by Belgian daily Het Laatste Nieuws.

However, the Chelsea manager revealed that De Bruyne wanted to play every game and was not ready to put in the hard yards week-in-week-out to cement his spot.

Therefore, Mourinho stressed that due to the player’s mentality the only option he had was to sell De Bruyne and he was happy with the money Chelsea made out of the deal with Wolfsburg.

“He didn’t want to fight for a place in a competitive squad. He told me that he didn’t have the personality to compete week-in-week-out. He thought he was more of a player who wanted to be assured of playing every game.

“I told him, ‘this is Chelsea and you are young. I have [Eden] Hazard, Willian, [Andre] Schurrle, I cannot promise anything’.

“He told me he was not happy and he didn’t train well. When I asked for more from him, he replied he could not stay.

“So I accepted it. If that was his mentality and he wanted to leave, it was better for Chelsea to close a good deal. We sold him and we made fantastic profits for someone who was bought for very little money.”

Manchester City are keen to bring him to England this summer and are reportedly ready to offer €72m to Wolfsburg to get the deal done.
