Ex-Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has backed the new management at former club Portsmouth to succeed and talked up Pompey’s solid fan base.

After a disappointing league campaign saw them finish 16th in League Two last season, Portsmouth have appointed Paul Cook as their new manager for the upcoming campaign.

Former Portsmouth boss Redknapp has backed the ex-Chesterfield manager for success, and feels the club’s considerable support will help drive them forward.

“There have been big changes at Portsmouth with new manager Paul Cook coming in. Cooky knows the league well and has done a job in the lower leagues before”, Redknapp posted on Kicca.

“The club has a great fan base and the stadium will be rocking if they get off to a good start.

“Portsmouth have a great fan base, no other club in that league can call on gates of 15,000-16,000.”

The 68-year-old has also talked up Pompey’s famous south coast rivalry with Premier League outfit Southampton, and says the huge support for club means no Southampton shirts are seen in Portsmouth.

“Not a lot of people know this but when you live there you support Pompey, you see very few Man Utd shirts or people wearing the tops of the ‘big clubs’, you especially don’t see any Southampton shirts, that would be more trouble than it’s worth!” added Redknapp.

Redknapp managed the south coast outfit in two separate spells and won the FA Cup with Pompey in 2008.

Portsmouth were relegated from the Premier League in 2010 and following two more relegations, they currently find themselves struggling in League Two.
