Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has hinted at a departure from Old Trafford in 2017, in order to keep his promise to his wife.

Van Gaal, who took over as the Manchester United manager at the start of last season, has a three-year contract with the Red Devils that keeps him in Manchester until the end of next season.

However, as far as the chances of extending his contract beyond the summer of 2017 are concerned, the veteran manager insists that he cannot be sure about that.

According to the Dutch manager, his wife Truus is a "very mad" woman and might be one of the primary reasons for him to bid adieu to football.

Van Gaal also took time to reveal that he promised her that he would quit football at the age of 55. However, he is nearing 64 now and has nothing more to achieve and so might be forced into thinking about his retirement at the end of his contract.

"I promised that to my wife. We have not many years together any more. That is the reason", van Gaal was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"I have done everything in my career as a manager."

Speaking about his promise to his wife, the veteran manager added: "I have to admit I have said to her, when I met her and our relationship seemed to be very good, that at 55 years I shall quit. I am still working and next week I am 64.

"The only wish was the Premier League. Now I am here.

"So. I have to go to Qatar to earn still more money? I don't think so. You have to enjoy also your life and your relationship with your wife."
