Juan Mata believes he could chip in with a significant amount of goals for Manchester United next season and pointed to a campaign at fellow Premier League side Chelsea as evidence to back up his view.

The Spaniard hit the back of the net nine times in the Premier League last season as he helped Louis van Gaal's men to register a finish of fourth and in so doing seal a return to the Champions League.

But the Spain international is not content to simply match last season's tally and wants to push on, remembering a campaign in which he hit 21 goals for Chelsea.

Mata was quoted as saying by beIN Sports: "I always try to score.

"I've always done that. I used to play as a striker when I was a kid and every team I played for I had a good goals record and it's the same at United", he continued.

"This season I will aim again to score a good number and to help the team with assists and goals.

"I had a 21-goal season at Chelsea and another with Valencia when I scored 14, so I've always been lucky enough to score a good number for a midfielder."

For Mata, ten goals in a season must be a minimum target for him to hit from his midfield position as he looks to contribute for the Red Devils.

"I always try to score more than 10 goals in a season. I've nearly always done that and I think that's a good number for a midfielder."

Mata is currently with Manchester United on their pre-season tour of the United States and could have increased responsibility for creating if, as appears likely, the Red Devils sell Angel di Maria to Paris Saint-Germain.
