Arsenal legend Ian Wright has claimed that Mesut Ozil has put in a good word for the Gunners with Karim Benzema as speculation over the Real Madrid striker potentially joining Arsene Wenger's men reaches fever pitch.

The Gunners have been linked with Benzema for much of the summer amid suggestions Wenger will look to bring in a world-class striker to help his side challenge for the Premier League title.

The French hitman added to the speculation earlier today by posting a photograph of himself in a private jet on Instagram, along with a cryptic message about leaving the past in the past.

Wright waded in by writing on Twitter "Don't tease bro", while Rio Ferdinand then commented: "Diversion via Manchester".

Former Arsenal striker Wright wasted no time in hitting back, posting: "I've heard Mesut Ozil has put a word in", mentioning Ferdinand in the message.

Speculation surrounding a potential move for Benzema to Arsenal has now gone into overdrive, but there has not been any suggestion yet that Real Madrid are looking to sell the striker.

Gunners boss Wenger is a firm fan of his countryman and has snapped up big names from Spain in the last two summer transfer windows however, while he also has money to spend.

In 2013 he smashed Arsenal's transfer record to pieces to buy Ozil from Real Madrid, while last year he raided Barcelona for Alexis Sanchez.
