Napoli striker and Manchester United and Arsenal target Gonzalo Higuain is set to sign a new contract that will see him stay at the Serie A outfit until 2019, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

Higuain’s existing contract lasts until the summer of 2018 and the new deal will see an extension of a further year.

The Argentine will pocket €6m per year as part of the new deal and his existing €94m release clause will drop in the event the Serie A side fail to qualify for the Champions League next season.

The 27-year-old netted 18 league goals and assisted his team-mates with a further seven strikes last term, but Napoli failed to qualify for the elite European competition after finishing fifth in the league standings.

Higuain moved to Napoli in the summer of 2013 from Real Madrid, choosing the club ahead of Arsenal, and has been an important presence in the Italian side’s first team.
