Southampton have completed the signing of Queens Park Rangers defender Steven Caulker on a season-long loan deal.

Caulker joined Queens Park Rangers last summer from Cardiff City after the Welsh outfit were relegated to the Championship following a solitary season in the top flight.

He made 35 appearances in the league last term for the Rs, but couldn’t help them stave off relegation to the Championship.

Southampton couldn’t make Toby Alderweireld’s loan deal permanent as the Belgian moved to Tottenham Hotspur and have also been dealt an injury blow to Florin Gardos.

In the prevailing circumstances, the Saints were left looking for an addition to their backline and Caulker’s move will give manager Ronald Koeman another option in defence.
