Jose Mourinho has insisted that Rafael Benitez destroyed his Inter Milan team within six months of succeeding him at the San Siro.

The Portuguese won the Champions League with the Nerazzurri in 2010, but left for Real Madrid at the end of the campaign.

The former Liverpool boss succeeded him at the San Siro, but was sacked after just half a season in charge of Inter following an array of bad results.

Recently Benitez’s wife joked that her husband has always been tasked with the job of cleaning up the mess left by Mourinho and the current Chelsea manager didn’t take the comment too kindly.

The Chelsea boss hit back at the Spaniard’s better half by saying that the only time Benitez directly succeeded him was at Inter and the former Liverpool manager did dismantle a team that won the Champions League under him.

He added that Benitez got the Chelsea and Real Madrid jobs long after he left the respective clubs.

“The lady is confused”, Mourinho was quoted as saying by Mundo Deportivo.

“When he came to Chelsea, he replaced [Roberto] Di Matteo and now at Madrid he has come in as a replacement for [Carlo] Ancelotti.

“The only time he replaced me was at Inter and in six months he destroyed the best team in Europe.”
