Real Madrid manager Rafael Benitez has refused to get into a war of words with Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, following unsavoury remarks about the Spaniard from the Portuguese.

Benitez has taken charge of three clubs that Mourinho has managed before him – Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid – of which his stint at Inter followed immediately after the Portuguese’s tenure.

Mourinho has said that Benitez destroyed his treble-winning Inter Milan side when the Spaniard took the reins of the Italian outfit following his departure in 2010, words which came in response to the Spaniard's wife explaining her husband must always clean up the Portuguese's mess.

However, Benitez has refused to comment on Mourinho’s remarks, saying that he prefers to talk about football above other things.

“I am Real Madrid’s coach, I love football, I understand football and for that reason I only talk about football”, he was quoted as saying by Madrid-based daily AS in a press conference.

When the former Liverpool boss was specifically asked about Mourinho’s comments on his work at Inter Milan, Benitez refused to budge from his stance and preferred to talk about his team’s next game on their pre-season tour of China.

“We are here to prepare for the Milan game and a tour which so far, has been going well.

“I’d like to talk about the present day game and that means Real Madrid or the future of Madrid.”
