Former England and Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer feels Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers will be under “huge pressure” to deliver silverware at the club in the coming campaign.

Shearer is of the opinion that with the amount of money spent in the close season by Rodgers at Liverpool, along with last summer, the manager will be under pressure to win a trophy next season.

Speaking to BBC Sport, the former England international said: "Brendan's spent a lot of money again, he has to achieve success this year, he has to win something.”

The Reds have brought in seven new players over the summer, including big money signings Brazilian midfielder Roberto Firmino and former Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke.

The 44-year-old also expressed his concerns over Rodgers’ future at the club, pointing to the changes to the Northern Irishman’s backroom staff during the summer, which he believes hints at the growing pressure on the former Reading manager to deliver the Reds’ first piece of silverware in three years.

"Also with the change of his backroom staff, the way it happened, I'm not sure that you have a trusted lieutenant right throughout your career and then you come to the end of the season and because you've had a poor season say 'we're going in a different technical direction'.

"That doesn't sit easy. Something smells a little bit there.

“Brendan will be under huge pressure”, added Shearer.

Liverpool, who finished a disappointing sixth in the Premier League last season, will start their new season away to Stoke City on the 9th of August.
