Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed that he will start the season with a 4-3-3 formation.

The Dutchman had to show tactical flexibility last season because of the amount of injuries his squad suffered but he settled down on a 4-3-3 formation towards the end of the campaign.

Van Gaal is traditionally known for playing with the particular formation but variety of reasons led to him chopping and changing systems during the 2014/15 season.

However, the Manchester United boss confirmed that he will start the season with his preferred formation and is happy with the way his team have played in the system during their pre-season tour.

When asked which formation he will deploy in the Premier League, Van Gaal told the club’s official website: "More or less 4-3-3.

“We played that already last season, in the second half of the season, and I have said that is the system I want to use.

“We played in our shape [on tour] and played how we have to play. That's also where I have been very satisfied.”

Manchester United won three of their four pre-season games in the United States and are expected to fly back to England later this week.

The Red Devils will open their Premier League campaign against Tottenham at Old Trafford on 8th August.
