Manchester United target Sergio Ramos is set to sign a new long-term contract with Real Madrid.

The English giants’ long chase for the 29-year-old defender could finally end in disappointment as Ramos is expected to sign a new contract with Los Blancos which will run until 2020.

Club president Florentino Perez met the player and his agent last weekend to iron out their differences and it seems outlines of a new contract have also been agreed.

According to Madrid-based daily Marca, the defender has agreed to a new five-year contract and he is expected to sign on the dotted line before the new La Liga season begins on 23rd August.

The club hierarchy have decided to offer him a pay rise and the defender is expected to earn a salary of around €9m per season after he signs the new deal.

The new deal runs until 2020 and the defender could have the opportunity to end his career at the Bernabeu, which is claimed to have been the player’s wish.

Manchester United were ready to offer him more money, but Ramos has decided to commit his long-term future to Real Madrid and he is expected to be named their official captain soon.

Louis van Gaal is still in the market for defenders but now will have to turn his attention towards other targets after failing to lure Ramos to Old Trafford this summer.
