Hibernian have agreed a developmental fee with St. Mirren for the transfer of midfielder John McGinn, something which may well offer hope to Rangers in their pursuit of Scott Allan.

Hibs are expected to complete the deal to sign the 20-year-old Scottish midfielder from their Championship rivals in the next 24 hours, according to BBC Scotland.

McGinn has made 98 appearances for St. Mirren and is also the skipper of the Scotland Under-21s.

He is being widely regarded as a replacement for Rangers target Allan, who has already handed in a transfer request to facilitate his move away from Hibernian.

However, Hibs boss Alan Stubbs is adamant that is not the case and stressed that the club are only looking to strengthen their squad with McGinn’s signature.

Speaking to the BBC, the Hibernian manager said: "People will ask, is it a statement, but it's just the club looking to sign good players."

Hibernian have already rejected two bids from Rangers for Allan and despite the midfielder’s transfer request, the club have stressed that they have no interest in selling a player to a direct rival.

Allan has only one year left on his contract and the club are presumably ready to lose him for free next season rather than sell him to Rangers.
