Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has hit back at Jose Mourinho's claims that the Gunners abandoned their philosophy in order to beat his side 1-0 in the Community Shield today.

Wenger's side got the better of Mourinho's men at Wembley, scoring through Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the 24th minute and then keeping the Blues at bay for the remainder of the match.

After the game Mourinho accused Wenger's side of abandoning their philosophy by defending deeply and being more interested in hitting Chelsea on the counter attack than playing flowing football.

But Wenger does not agree with the Portuguese's assessment, quickly hitting back at the claims and declaring himself proud of his men.

The Frenchman said via his club's site: "We abandoned nothing. We defended well.

"Our game is based on togetherness, on solidarity, and defending and attacking well. I believe that we defended because there was maybe a bit of a psychological hurdle ahead of my players.

"They were more concerned with protecting our lead against Chelsea rather than playing attacking football. We have to accept that and I don’t think that’s giving up your philosophy, it’s a punctual fact that we wanted to win a game like that. I’m quite proud of that", Wenger added.

Arsenal have now enjoyed a pre-season littered with trophies, having won the Barclays Asia Trophy in Singapore, beating Everton in the final, while they also picked up the Emirates Cup.

And beating Chelsea in the Community Shield is the first time Wenger has managed to guide a side to victory against a Mourinho-led team, something else sure to give the Gunners a boost.
