Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola has backed Bastian Schweinsteiger to shine at Manchester United – if he can remain fit for an extended period.

Schweinsteiger often struggled with injuries in recent years, something which contributed towards his dwindling playing time at the Allianz Arena.

Earlier this summer he left Bayern Munich for a new challenge with Manchester United, linking up with a familiar face in former Bavarians coach Louis van Gaal and putting pen to paper on a three-year deal.

Guardiola thinks Schweinsteiger should be able to turn on the style at Old Trafford, if he can steer clear of his injury demons.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the Audi Cup friendly tournament, Guardiola said: "If he does not have injury problems I am convinced he will do very well at Manchester United.

"Unfortunately in the last three years he wasn't in good condition."

But Guardiola backed Schweinsteiger's quality, dubbing the Germany international a "top player". He also stated his hope that the midfielder can show his qualities in English football.

"He is going to play well there. I hope that's going to happen."

Schweinsteiger is one of a clutch of new signings at Manchester United this summer as the Red Devils look to improve on a finish of just fourth in the Premier League last season.
