Bayern Munich and Germany legend Lothar Matthaus says that he believes Jose Mourinho is the best manager in the world, ahead of Pep Guardiola.

Matthaus' former club Bayern Munich are currently led by Guardiola, who has guided the Bavarians to successive Bundesliga titles since he arrived in 2013.

Indeed, the Spaniard has added his success at Bayern Munich to a glittering spell in charge of Barcelona which saw 14 trophies collected in four years, a total which includes two Champions League and three La Liga titles.

But for Matthaus, Guardiola is still behind Mourinho when it comes to who is the best manager in world football, on account of the Portuguese's honest and transparent approach with his players.

In an interview with Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport, the German said: "For me Pep is not the best coach in the world.

"I prefer Mourinho. He is number one because Mourinho is more transparent and direct.

"The players that he has coached tell me that. He says everything to your face."

Both Mourinho and Guardiola tasted defeat over the weekend, losing their respective season curtain-raisers.

Mourinho's Chelsea lost the FA Community Shield to Arsenal at Wembley, while Bayern Munich went down in the German Super Cup to Wolfsburg on penalties.
