Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp feels that Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has the ability to give striker Radamel Falcao's career a new lease of life, which would allow him to carry the baton in Diego Costa's absence.

Costa has had issues with injury, having been able to feature in only 26 of the Pensioners' 38 league matches, scoring 20 goals, last season.

Redknapp therefore is apprehensive about how much service the Premier League title holders will receive from the Spanish international this season.

However, the veteran manager insists that Costa's absence will not mean that Chelsea's strength will suffer as Falcao has joined.

Redknapp, studying the options that Chelsea have in the form of Loic Remy and Falcao, explained that there is no doubt that both have the ability to score goals and kill off a game given the right kind of opportunities.

The ex-QPR boss though counts on Falcao more, as he believes he has the ability to carry the baton in Costa's absence, and is also confident that Mourinho will certainly manage to get the best out of him.

"Chelsea are still going to be strong this season", Redknapp wrote on social network Kicca.

"If Costa is injured a lot and is going to be missing, that’s the scary part – can they get away without him?

"Remy can score goals for sure, with the right opportunities he can finish. And you’d think Falcao could do well.

"I know he didn’t have a good year at Manchester United and his stock has dropped massively but a year ago you’d think ‘my god, what a player’. But I think Mourinho will get the best out of him and get him scoring again.

"So if Costa does pick up injuries, and it seems his hamstring isn’t great at the moment, one of Remy and Falcao has got to carry the baton and do the job and whether they can is the question mark.

"Maybe Falcao can do the job, Jose’s placed his faith in him. Jose can lift people and improve people and if he can get the best out of him maybe they’ll be ok."
