Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has stressed the need for the Lilywhites to add another high-quality midfielder and a striker to their ranks in order to compete for a top four spot.

With the new season set to kick off in a few days' time, there will be renewed hope and expectation among the Tottenham faithful about their club mounting a serious challenge for a top four spot at the end of the term.

However Redknapp, who managed the club, feels that the north London side still need players to make themselves competitive and fight for a top four place.

"I am hoping Spurs can get back into the top four, but it will be tough", Redknapp wrote on social network Kicca.

"They’re probably a couple of players short of mounting a serious challenge to get in that top four.

"He [Mauricio Pochettino] needs another frontman and another top midfielder for sure.

"He’s got some good kids in the midfield, but they are young so I think he needs real outstanding, experienced midfielder in there and he certainly needs another frontman, he cannot rely on just Harry Kane to score all the goals."

The veteran manager also took time to speak about his admiration for current Tottenham manager Pochettino, who he believes will do a great job if he is given the right backing by the club authorities.

"I am a big fan of the manager and he’ll do well if he gets the backing he needs, then just like Liverpool, they’ll have their sights set on the top four."

Redknapp also struck an optimistic note about seeing a six-way battle for the top four spots in the league this year.

"I think it will be really tight this year, I am not sitting on the fence, there are six teams that will push for those Champions League spots, it will be very tight."
