Olivier Giroud is pleased with the fact that Arsenal finally ended their long winless streak against Chelsea in the Community Shield on Sunday.

An Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain goal allowed the Gunners to register a narrow 1-0 win over the reigning Premier League champions in the traditional curtain raiser to the season.

It was Arsene Wenger’s first win over Jose Mourinho and though the Community Shield is treated as more or less a friendly, the Gunners were pleased to put down an early marker for the upcoming Premier League campaign.

Many feel the win could propel Arsenal to sustain a serious title challenge next season and while Giroud is not too sure about the effect the win will have on the league campaign, he admits beating Chelsea after a long winless streak against them was special.

When asked whether the win would turn out to be a turning point in Arsenal’s rise as serious title contenders, the Frenchman told RMC Sport: “I don’t know. In any case it is good to have broken the run against Chelsea and regain some ascendancy.

“It was always a little frustrating playing against them because we have played well in some matches, but didn’t get the results, so it is good to have reversed the trend.

“I do not know whether it is a turning point, but in any case it pleased the coach because we were rewarded for our efforts.”

With the Community Shield in the bag, Arsenal are expected to start the season on the front foot against West Ham on Sunday at the Emirates Stadium.
