Free agent midfielder Joey Barton has admitted he would "love" to play for Scottish champions Celtic in the future.

Barton has been is a free agent since being released by QPR at the end of last season, with the midfielder unable to prevent the R's from being relegated from the Premier League to the Championship.

The start of the new English and Scottish season is just days away, but Barton is still without a club.

But he has offered Celtic hope of signing him, expressing his hope to turn out for the Bhoys, although admitting that ideally he would like to play against Rangers in Old Firm games.

Asked on Twitter if he would play for Celtic, Barton replied: "Would love to one day.

"Maybe when the Old Firm is back it would appeal more. Always wanted to attend/play in one."

Currently Celtic' fierce rivals Rangers are in the second tier in Scotland as they work their way up from the bottom of the pyramid.

It also remains to be seen whether Bhoys manager Ronny Deila would consider a swoop for Barton, who will be 33 years old in September.
