Rangers legend Richard Gough admits that he has been left hugely impressed after a meeting with the club's new manager Mark Warburton.

The Gers appointed former Brentford boss Warburton earlier this summer, with former Rangers defender David Weir making the journey from the same club to act as his assistant.

Rangers have played two official games under Warburton, thrashing Hibernian 6-2 in the Petrofac Training Cup and then beating Peterhead 3-0 in the Scottish League Cup.

And Gough, who met Warburton for the first time on Sunday, is impressed with the Englishman and his approach at Ibrox, dubbing him "top class" and also lauding his intelligent approach to the game.

Gough said via Rangers' site: "I met Mr Warburton for the first time after the game on Sunday, alongside David Weir who is an old colleague of mine from Everton.

"He is a top-class fella, and while they’ve only been here for a few weeks, they will put what they want to do in place, and the manager seems a very intelligent gentleman and the team look good."

The former defender has also backed Rangers' recruitment under Warburton, who has added a number of new players over the summer as he bids to shape a side capable of winning promotion from the Championship.

"I like the way the management team are going about it with the players they’ve bought.

"They haven’t bought anyone for £3m or £4m, but they are going slowly like a jigsaw puzzle."
