Roma have made initial contact with Real Madrid for the signature of Portugal international defender Fabio Coentrao.

The 27-year-old has been consistently linked with a move to Manchester United over the last few years, but the trail has recently gone cold.

The Portuguese international is no longer a starter at Real Madrid and the club are ready to offload him this summer.

Roma have shown an interest in the player and according to Sky Italia, they have approached Real Madrid to negotiate a transfer for the 27-year-old full-back.

The Giallorossi are planning to sign him on an initial loan with the right to make the move permanent later, but Real Madrid are insisting on inserting a mandatory purchase option in the agreement.

While there are disagreements, the clubs are expected to continue to negotiate over the next few days to find a solution and agree a deal for Coentrao’s transfer.

While it is unclear whether Roma have agreed terms with Coentrao, the player is believed to be ready to make a move this summer and start afresh at a new club.

Coentrao joined Real Madrid from Benfica in 2011 and still has four years left on his contract with the club.
