Newcastle United's scouts have delivered a glowing assessment of Werder Bremen defender Jannik Vestergaard and the Magpies are looking to take the 23-year-old to St James' Park.

Vestergaard, who is over 6ft 6in tall, has been watched by Newcastle's talent spotters, who took a close look at his talents last term.

According to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato, Steve McClaren's men are now lining up a swoop for the Denmark international as they look to boost their defensive options.

Despite being eligible to play for Germany, Vestergaard chose to represent the country of his birth, Denmark, at international level.

The centre-back has turned out for Denmark from Under-18 level through to the senior side, for whom he now has three caps.
