West Ham United co-chairman David Gold has ruled out a move for Joey Barton to Upton Park.

Barton is available on a free transfer following his release from relegated QPR at the end of last season and was reported to be undergoing a medical with the Hammers ahead of a move.

But Gold says that West Ham will not be signing Barton amid talk that a fan revolt against the controversial midfielder, who spent time in prison in 2008 for common assault and affray, has changed the club's stance.

The West Ham co-chairman said via Twitter: "Despite the speculation, Joey Barton will not be joining West Ham United."

Barton has now missed the start of the Premier League season as he looks to find himself a new club.

However, as a free agent he can move outside the transfer window system and as such may be an attractive proposition to sides who miss out on players and then see the window slam shut next month.

Barton has been capped once by England, turning out for the Three Lions in 2007.
