Nicolas Gaitan’s much anticipated transfer to Manchester United is being held up because of work permit issues, it has been claimed in Portugal.

The Argentina international has been consistently linked with a move to Manchester United for the last few years, but a transfer has never seen the light of the day.

The link again made a comeback this summer and Manchester United are again reportedly trying to recruit the 27-year-old winger.

They have been claimed to be in talks with the player’s representatives and Benfica over a transfer for months, and it has been reported that Gaitan remains a priority for Louis van Gaal.

However, according to Portuguese daily Record, work permit issues are holding up the Argentine’s much anticipated transfer to Old Trafford this summer.

To secure a work permit in England, a player must play in 75% of all his country’s international matches in the last two years, but Gaitan is not a regular in the Argentina national team.

Manchester United may try to secure a work permit during the last days of the transfer window to facilitate the Argentine’s move to Old Trafford.

Valencia are also interested in the player and are keeping a close watch on the proceedings at Benfica.
