West Ham United have opened talks with Niort over signing star Kevin Malcuit in what is potentially a big blow to the French sides chasing the versatile 24-year-old.

Malcuit has been on the radar at both Saint-Etienne and Nice, but the Ligue 1 duo now face a tough task in landing the player given West Ham's interest.

According to French radio station RMC, the Hammers have now opened talks with Niort about signing right-sided player in an effort to take him to Upton Park this summer.

A product of Monaco's youth set-up, Malcuit has caught the eyes of a number of clubs with his impressive performance for Niort.

The 24-year-old has just a further year to run on his contract with Niort, making him a potential bargain signing for West Ham.

Malcuit has featured in two of his club's opening three Ligue 2 games this season, but has been unable to help his side avoid losing two and drawing one to sit 19th in the 20-team league.
