Hull City manager Steve Bruce has confirmed his interest in Crystal Palace forward Dwight Gayle, but does not know if he will be able to afford the player.

The Tigers had been chasing Brentford striker Andre Gray, but have now called off their chase for the 24-year-old after a bid lodged by Bristol City.

Hull, despite only just dropping down from the Premier League, are not willing to pay the £9m that Bristol City have put on the plate for Gray.

Bruce explained to BBC Radio Humberside: "We've chased him for a long, long time, but we have not matched what Bristol have offered.

"We've known the price all along", he added.

While Hull's interest in Gray is now dead, their interest in Crystal Palace's Gayle lives on – but Bruce admits it may be ended by the Eagles' asking price, if it proves out of reach.

"Whether we can afford him, I don't know", the Tigers boss conceded.

Palace snapped up Gayle from Peterborough United in 2013, paying a reported £4.5m to secure his signature.

The 25-year-old has been widely linked with leaving Selhurst Park this summer.
