Louis van Gaal is sticking to his stance over Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, promising to assess the situation when the transfer window closes.

De Gea has less than a year to run on his contract at Old Trafford and is wanted by Real Madrid, a move it has been claimed he is keen to make.

The goalkeeper has not signed a new deal with Manchester United, despite being offered one, but Real Madrid have refused to meet the Red Devils' asking price for the custodian.

De Gea, who has been left out of Manchester United's matchday squads this season, is in limbo.

At a press conference this morning, Van Gaal was asked about De Gea, but offered no new information.

The Dutchman replied: "I said three weeks ago that we shall evaluate the De Gea situation on 1st September."

The ball now appears to be firmly in Real Madrid's court to meet Manchester United's asking price for the Spanish shot-stopper.

However, having already signed Kiko Casilla and boasting Keylor Navas, Real Madrid can afford to sit tight.
