Real Sociedad have completed the purchase of Real Madrid midfielder Asier Illarramendi and have handed him a six-year deal.

Illarramendi is a product of Real Sociedad’s youth academy and joined Los Blancos in the summer of 2013, however, he failed to make his mark in the Spanish capital and was reduced to sporadic starts.

His lack of adequate first team action saw him linked with a move to several European clubs including Liverpool and Juventus, but he has eventually chosen to go back to his old club.

A statement released by the club website confirmed the return of the 25-year-old, who has been handed a six-year deal.

“Real Sociedad and Real Madrid have reached an agreement for the transfer of Asier Illarramendi to our club.

“He has signed for six seasons.”

Illarramendi will hope to shine for David Moyes’ side and help them improve upon their 12th placed league finish from last season.

During his time at the Santiago Bernabeu, the midfielder made 90 appearances across all competitions and scored three times. He also won the Champions League in 2014.
