Celtic are closing in on snapping up Manchester United defender Tyler Blackett on a loan deal, according to the BBC.

Blackett featured for Manchester United's first team last term and made 12 appearances for Louis van Gaal's men.

But chances are limited for the 21-year-old this term and the Red Devils are on the verge of shipping him out to Celtic.

The deal would see Blackett spend the entire season on loan with Ronny Deila's Scottish champions.

Blackett is able to operate in central defence or as a left-back and his arrival could place further question marks over the future of Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk.

Van Dijk has been linked with moving to Southampton and speculation around a transfer has gone into overdrive following Celtic's failure to qualify for the Champions League group stage.

Blackett has had prior loans spells away from Old Trafford, spending time with Blackpool and Birmingham City.
