Rangers manager Mark Warburton admits he did not know when he released Darren McGregor that the defender would sign for Hibernian, but has cut the figure of a man who does not care about the player strengthening his club's rivals.

Hibernian refused to sell Scott Allan to Rangers throughout the summer, arguing they were not prepared to strengthen their rivals for promotion by selling the midfielder to the Gers.

But Rangers have ended up strengthening Hibernian after releasing McGregor, who instantly headed to Easter Road.

For Warburton though, where McGregor has gone is of no concern, even though he admits he did not know the defender would be moving to Rangers' Championship rivals.

"I didn't know where Darren was going. I had no doubt he'd go to another club", Warburton revealed at a press conference.

"I wish Darren all the best. I don't mind where he goes.

"No disrespect, but we've made our move here, so it's irrelevant where the player goes to", the Rangers boss added.

Hibernian are widely believed to be set to provide Rangers' stiffest challenge for automatic promotion from the Championship this season and McGregor has now bolstered the Easter Road side's defence.

McGregor made his debut for Hibernian earlier this week in a League Cup win over Stranraer.
