Arsene Wenger feels his Arsenal team gave a mature performance to nick a narrow 1-0 win over Newcastle United earlier today at St. James’ Park.

Newcastle United were always going to chase the game after Aleksandar Mitrovic was sent off because of a studs-up challenge on Francis Coquelin in the 16th minute.

Arsenal went on to dominate the game but for all their possession of the ball, the away side created very few genuine goalscoring opportunities.

However, the Gunners took the lead when Tim Krul parried an Aaron Ramsey shot to the path of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and he hammered home the rebound, which took a heavy deflection from Fabricio Coloccini on its way to the goal.

After taking the lead Arsenal kept control of the game and closed out the affair by calmly keeping hold of the ball during the final few minutes of the match.

Wenger lauded his team’s performance and felt that the Gunners provided a mature performance on the face of a physical Newcastle side.

"We were always on top”, Wenger said on BT Sport.

“We were mature and intelligent and the win was important so maybe we were a bit cautious.

“They toughened the game up, they decided from the start to make it very physical but we kept our nerve."

Arsenal are going into the international break with seven points in their bag and will take on Stoke City on 12th September at the Emirates.
