Lazio could spring a last minute surprise by signing Emmanuel Adebayor from Tottenham Hotspur.

The Rome club's spending power has been severely cut after they failed to reach the Champions League group stage; Bayer Leverkusen knocked Lazio out earlier this week in the playoff round.

Lazio have been forced to cut their cloth accordingly, but could still pull a rabbit out of the hat in the form of Adebayor.

According to Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport, Lazio president Claudio Lotito is in talks over signing Adebayer before the transfer window slams shut.

The deal is possible for the Serie A side as Spurs are even willing to consider letting Adebayor leave on a free transfer, so keen are they to offload the striker.

Nevertheless, Lazio will still have to afford the 31-year-old's salary demands, which may still prove challenging.

Lazio though are close to letting Lorik Cana join French side Nantes, which would free up further space on the club's wage bill.
