Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes Sergio Romero failed his first real test as Manchester United goalkeeper today.

Romero was in less than sparkling form in a 2-1 defeat away at Swansea City, being especially culpable for the Welsh side's second goal, which was a weak Bafetimbi Gomis shot and ultimately saw all three points secured for the hosts.

The Argentina shot-stopper has been Manchester United's number 1 since the start of the season as Louis van Gaal has insisted on leaving David de Gea out of his team, as speculation over a move to Real Madrid rumbles on.

But Carragher is less than impressed with Romero.

He said on Sky Sports after the match: "He had three clean sheets [before the game], but he had nothing to do.

"Today was the first time he was asked questions.

"He was asked to make saves, but he didn't make them."

And Carragher's fellow pundit, former Manchester United defender Gary Neville, agrees if De Gea leaves and Romero is the Red Devils' number 1, they have a problem.

"They need to sort the goalkeeper situation out", Neville explained.

"That is a big problem if De Gea leaves and they don't get a replacement in."

Romero joined Manchester United on a free transfer earlier this summer following the expiry of his contract at Italian side Sampdoria, where he had struggled for regular first team football.
