Virgil van Dijk is expected to join Ronald Koeman's Southampton from Celtic before the transfer window closes, but no agreement has been reached on the fee for the Dutchman yet.

According to Dutch daily the Algemeen Dagblad, both clubs are locked in talks over the fee to be paid by the Premier League side for the centre-back.

But an agreement is set to be reached which allows Van Dijk to embark upon the next phase of his career at St. Mary's.

Celtic had been hoping to keep hold of Van Dijk, but now appear to have given up the fight after they failed to reach the Champions League group stage.

The 24-year-old revealed earlier this summer that he was ready to move to the Premier League and hoped Celtic would not stand in his way if an acceptable bid arrived.

"They must understand that as a footballer, sometimes it's time to make a move", Van Dijk told the Scottish champions.

"Of course the Champions League millions are important for Celtic, but they cannot dismiss any interest.

"If the correct amount is placed on the table, then they will really think about it, yes."

Celtic are thought to have already signed Van Dijk's replacement after they captured Tyler Blackett from Manchester United on a season-long loan deal.
