Marseille have missed out on capturing Erik Lamela from Tottenham Hotspur after the English club's manager Mauricio Pochettino refused to sign off on the deal.

The French giants were confident of doing a season-long loan deal with Spurs for Lamela, however the switch hit a late hitch as Spurs insisted on the need to have a replacement lined up before the move could proceed.

Now the deal is dead after Pochettino flatly refused to sign it off, according to French radio station RMC.

The deal would have been a season-long loan with an option to buy for the French club.

Now Marseille have been left disappointed and Lamela, who was ready to move to the Stade Velodrome, is almost sure to be staying put at White Hart Lane.

Lamela could still move this summer as English clubs can make signings until 6pm (UK time) tomorrow, but it would appear unlikely Spurs would want to reinforce domestic rivals.

Spurs snapped up the Argentina winger from Italian Serie A giants Roma in 2013, but he has struggled to live up to expectations at White Hart Lane.
