Schalke have confirmed that they have sold attacking midfielder Julian Draxler to fellow Bundesliga side Wolfsburg for a club-record fee.

Draxler, who has been regularly linked with Arsene Wenger's Arsenal, appeared to be on his way to Italian champions Juventus before Wolfsburg intervened.

Flush with cash from selling Belgium midfielder Kevin De Bruyne to Manchester City, the Wolves have secured Draxler's signature, bringing in the Germany international as a replacement.

Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt explained the reasons for the deal in a statement via his club's official site, commenting: "We have decided to accept the offer from Wolfsburg for two reasons.

"We are not going to disclose any information about any concrete [financial] details, but we can say that economically we are achieving the biggest transfer in the history of the club", he continued.

"Furthermore, we are granting Julian's explicit wish to leave the club."

Draxler will now bolster Wolfsburg's ranks as the Bundesliga side look to continue to push Bayern Munich following their finish of second last term and also prepare to compete in the Champions League group stage.

The midfielder leaves Ruhr giants Schalke having made 119 appearances for the club in the Bundesliga and scored 18 goals in the process.
