Thierry Henry believes if Arsenal wanted to sign Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema then they had to make the club an attractive proposition to the Frenchman, hinting only signing Petr Cech did not do.

Despite Arsene Wenger's continued protestations that Arsenal were not chasing Benzema, talk of a swoop for the France international refused to die down until the player himself insisted he was remaining at Real Madrid.

Arsenal have ended the summer transfer window having signed only goalkeeper Cech from Chelsea, failing to address a number of areas which have been highlighted as requiring improvement if a title challenge is to be launched.

Henry says he does not know if Wenger wanted Benzema, but if he did, then Arsenal had to make themselves an attractive move for the striker.

"If you want Benzema you have to make sure you can attract him and he plays for one of the best clubs in the world", Henry said on Sky Sports News.

The Arsenal legend later added: "I don't know if the boss wanted Benzema, but what are you going to offer to a player at one of the best clubs in the world?

"He has to want to come."

Arsenal now find themselves with the same attacking options as last season, when they finished third in the Premier League without ever pushing champions Chelsea for the title.

Wenger's men were also knocked out in the round of 16 in the Champions League, though they did win the FA Cup.
