Arsenal made a move to sign Juventus striker Simone Zaza on transfer deadline day, but were knocked back by Juventus, who pointed out it would be impossible for them to replace the player.

Juventus signed Zaza from Sassuolo earlier this summer, though there was doubt over whether he would remain in Turin and West Ham chased his signature recently.

However, following the departure of Fernando Llorente to Sevilla, Zaza's spot with Juventus was confirmed.

Arsenal though, scrambling around for reinforcements in the final stage of the transfer window, came forward for Zaza, according to Sky Italia.

The Gunners made contact with the striker's agent yesterday and then spoke to Juventus earlier today.

But with the transfer window having slammed shut in Italy on Monday night, Juventus pointed out that they would not be able to sign a replacement for Zaza and therefore could not consider selling him.

Juventus did offer Arsenal the opportunity to make an offer for Zaza they could not refuse, setting his asking price at €30m, safe in the knowledge the Gunners would not meet such a sum, which they duly refused to.

Zaza is now looking forward to the campaign with Juventus, while Arsenal signed only one player this summer in the shape of goalkeeper Petr Cech.
