Aston Villa are closing in on a surprise move for former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov, according to ITV.

Berbatov is a free agent following his release from French Ligue 1 outfit Monaco and is currently in Birmingham to undergo a medical ahead of a switch to Villa Park.

The Bulgarian is well known to Villa boss Tim Sherwood due to his spell at Tottenham Hotspur and now appears set for another crack at the Premier League.

Berbatov first moved to England to play for Spurs in 2006 and clocked up a two-year stint at White Hart Lane before joining Manchester United in 2008.
