Former Liverpool director of football Damien Comolli feels Manchester United are overpaying for Anthony Martial, but believes the youngster has the ability to shine at Old Trafford in the future.

Manchester United made a late move for the France Under-21 forward on Sunday and after securing permission from the France Football Federation he arrived in England yesterday to complete the formalities of his switch from Monaco.

The Red Devils are claimed in France to have agreed a fee worth €60m with Monaco for the transfer of Martial and the price could rise up to €80m based on his performances.

While Comolli feels the English giants are paying over the odds to secure the talent, he admits that the forward has the ability to light up Old Trafford in the future.

Comolli, who in his early career also worked at Monaco as a coach, said Martial is a mix of former French international strikers Nicolas Anelka and Thierry Henry.

Comolli was quoted as saying by the BBC: “I don’t think he is worth the money they are paying now, but the potential for him to become a world-class player is definitely there.

“I was a youth coach at Monaco when Thierry Henry was there and I was at Arsenal when Nicolas Anelka was there as a teenager and for me Martial is in the same category as those two.

“So he could have a huge impact for Manchester United in the future.”

Martial has reportedly passed a medical at Old Trafford and Manchester United are expected to make the deal official soon.
