Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has backed Anthony Martial to realise his potential at Old Trafford.

Van Gaal has reportedly forked out £36m to secure the signature of the France Under-21 international from AS Monaco and the fee could rise up even higher based on his performances at Old Trafford in the future.

The 19-year-old forward has become the most expensive teenager in the world, but the Manchester United manager is confident that the move will eventually pay off for the English giants.

Van Gaal is delighted with Martial’s signature and revealed that his scouting team have been following the versatile forward’s progress at Monaco for a while.

“We have been watching him for a while now and he has developed immensely during his time at AS Monaco.”

The Dutchman also believes Manchester United are the perfect club for the forward to continue to develop as a footballer and is confident that he will realise his potential at Old Trafford.

However, Van Gaal warned that Martial is new to the Premier League and should be given the time to get used to the pace of English football.

"I am delighted he has joined Manchester United as I believe this is the right club for him to continue his development as a young player.

“He has all the attributes to become a top football player; however we need to give him time to adjust to his new environment and the rhythm of the Premier League."
