Aston Villa defender Nathan Baker has stressed his desire to ensure regular first-team football after having secured a season-long loan switch to Bristol City.

The newly promoted Championship outfit are looking to add depth to their squad for the gruelling domestic season and the addition of a player who comes with Premier League experience will help them in their quest.

The 24-year-old has come through Aston Villa's academy, having made his senior debut for the club in 2009.

Since then Baker has managed a total of 89 appearances for the Villans, but has failed to make a telling impact in the team having been sent out on multiple loan spells.

The youngster will be joined by his former Villa Park team-mate Derrick Williams and fellow loanee Callum Robinson at Ashton Gate.

Speaking about the move and his feelings at having secured it, Baker told his new club's official website: "I’ve not been playing lately so I wanted to get out on loan and this is something that’s worked out well for me

“I want to play regular football. I don’t want to be sitting around on the bench – I want to progress with my career and hopefully this is the place to do it.

“Derrick’s here and Callum is obviously here on loan. I also know Mark Little from back home in Worcester, so it should be easy to settle in.”

As far as his adapting to the new style and the 3-5-2 formation at Bristol City, the youngster insisted that he has previous experience of playing in that formation under former manager Paul Lambert and that it will not therefore be a problem for him.

“I played in that system under Paul Lambert – I can play in a back three or a four, so that’s all fine."
