Real Madrid planned to unveil David de Gea today at the Santiago Bernabeu after his acquisition from Manchester United, according to Madrid-based daily Marca.

Los Blancos’ last ditch effort to sign the Manchester United custodian collapsed yesterday as the documentation reached Spain’s Professional Football League after the transfer deadline.

The Spanish giants claim the necessary paperwork was submitted at 23:59 on Monday, however, the Spanish league maintains Real Madrid missed the deadline, collapsing their bid for De Gea.

Real Madrid planned to unveil the Spain international in the VIP box at the Santiago Bernabeu today at 13:00, had the deal gone through, it has been claimed.

De Gea’s existing contract expires in less than a year and he will be able to move for free next summer.

He has been omitted from all of Manchester United’s games this season so far as Louis van Gaal feels that the custodian lacked focus due to speculation surrounding his future.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid will continue with Navas in goal and Kiko Casilla as his deputy.
