Southampton have reached an agreement over a fee with Celtic for the signature of defender Virgil van Dijk, according to the BBC.

The Saints have been in talks with the Scottish champions for weeks for the Dutch defender and it seems their persistence has finally paid off.

It has been suggested that Celtic have agreed to sell the former FC Groningen defender to the south coast club for a transfer fee of around £11.5m.

The 24-year-old has arrived in England and is currently undergoing a medical with the Premier League club ahead of his imminent move to St. Mary’s.

Van Dijk is expected to put pen to paper on a five-year deal with Southampton and will boost Ronald Koeman’s options at the back this season.

The Netherlands defender joined Celtic from FC Groningen in 2013 and has won two successive Scottish league titles and a Scottish League Cup with the Bhoys.

He has been linked with a move away from Celtic Park for some time, but their failure to make it to the Champions League group stage for the second season running is believed to have made the decision for him.

Van Dijk could make his debut for Southampton in an away trip to West Brom after the international break.
