West Ham co-chairman David Sullivan has hailed the signing of Michail Antonio from Nottingham Forest on transfer deadline day and has backed the winger to become a star at Upton Park.

Antonio had been linked with a switch to Derby County, but Forest vowed he would not be sold to another club in the Championship.

And the London-born winger has now headed back to the capital to sign for West Ham, with the Hammers paying what Sullivan has described as a sizeable fee for the player.

Sullivan told his club's official site: "We have paid a sizeable fee for Michail and believe he could become a star player for the club over the next few years.

"He has got pace and power and his stats show he has an eye for goal with an impressive record wherever he has played", the co-chairman continued.

"He scored 15 goals last season in the Championship and was voted player of the year at Forest which shows what the fans thought of him. He has already scored four goals this season as well.

"As well as scoring, Michail has been instrumental in setting up goals for his team-mates creating 15 assists last season and it would be fantastic if he could repeat that at West Ham."

West Ham fans will have to wait to see Antonio in action though as the international break has arrived and the Hammers next play Newcastle United at Upton Park on 14th September.
