Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has joined Greek club PAOK Salonika on a free transfer, despite being linked with Aston Villa on deadline day.

The Bulgarian was released by Monaco earlier in the summer and he was on the lookout for a new club for this season.

There was speculation that he was on his way to Aston Villa on deadline day yesterday, but the deal never materialised and he has joined the Greek outfit.

The former Manchester United star arrived in Thessaloniki yesterday and after completing a medical, he signed a one-year deal at the Toumba Stadium.

Berbatov continued to play an important part for Monaco last season and despite not being a first team starter, he scored seven Ligue 1 goals in 26 appearances for Leonardo Jardim’s side.

However, the club decided against signing him on a new contract and the 34-year-old left the Stade Louis II at the end of the 2014/15 campaign.

Berbatov also had a fruitful spell in English football with Manchester United and Tottenham and scored 94 Premier League goals in 228 appearances.

PAOK are currently 12th in the Greek Superleague.
