Former West Ham and Stoke City winger Matthew Etherington has slammed Arsene Wenger’s transfer policy this summer.

The Arsenal boss pulled off a major coup when he signed Petr Cech from Chelsea early in the summer, but the club remained inactive for the rest of the transfer window.

The Frenchman failed to add any significant outfield player to a squad that finished third last season and many feel Arsenal missed an opportunity to become genuine title contenders through their lackadaisical approach to the market.

Wenger recently questioned Manchester United’s rationale in paying big money to sign 19-year-old forward Anthony Martial from Monaco.

While Etherington feels the Red Devils are overpaying, he also believes the French forward has the talent to shine at Old Trafford.

However, the former Potter also slammed Wenger for criticising Manchester United and questioned why he failed to sign any outfield player this summer for Arsenal.

“[Martial is] overpriced without doubt, [but] looks a huge talent though”, Etherington told Breathe Sport.

“Maybe the real question is why Wenger never spent a single penny on an outfield player in this transfer window!”

Arsenal are the only club in Europe’s top five leagues who did not sign an outfield player for their first team this summer.
