Arsenal have suffered a blow with the news forward Danny Welbeck is expected to be out for several months after undergoing surgery in his left knee.

The England international has been battling a knee problem since April last year, but was hoping to avoid surgery and return to the first team squad.

However, after increasing his workload in training, the knee did not respond to treatment as he had hoped and he has had to take the last resort of going under the knife.

Surgery in his left knee means the former Manchester United man has been ruled out for months and it further depletes Arsene Wenger’s options up front.

Wenger decided against buying an outfield player this summer, but Welbeck’s injury has depleted an attack that has struggled for goals so far this season.

The Arsenal boss will be hoping the forward recovers quicker than expected and is available for selection for the busy winter months.

Arsenal are already missing Jack Wilshere due to injury and Wenger will be hoping that his inactivity during the summer window does not come back to bite him with more injuries this season.

Welbeck joined Arsenal from Manchester United on deadline day last summer and scored eight goals in 34 appearances in all competitions in his first season at the Emirates.
